New Oklahoma election law hopes to increase turnout & reduce confusion

OKLAHOMA -A new state law is changing when Oklahomans head to the polls, with lawmakers hoping a simpler election calendar will lead to higher voter turnout.

Senate Bill 652 took effect Jan. 1 and consolidates Oklahoma’s election dates into just five standard days each year: February, April, June, August, and November.

Supporters say the change will make it easier for voters to know when elections are happening and reduce strain on county election boards and poll workers.

“What we, through some research figured out, is that we just have too many election dates,” said State Representative Mike Osburn (R–Edmond). “And so, it’s hard for people to keep up with that.”
