A new Brazilian variant of the coronavirus has been confirmed in Oklahoma in a woman with a history of out-of-state travel, state health officials said Friday.
According the the AP, state epidemiologist Jared Taylor says the Brazil P.1 variant was detected in a woman who is no longer infectious and that at least one member of the womans household also tested positive for the coronavirus.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the Brazilian variant was first detected in the U.S. last month and contains a set of mutations that may affect its ability to be recognized by antibodies.
Taylor says it highly probable that one or more variants are circulating in Oklahoma.
