GOP-led ballot board finalizes Issue 1 redistricting ballot language over Dem objections

The Republican-led Ohio Ballot Board finalized this November’s Issue 1 ballot language on Wednesday following an Ohio Supreme Court order to correct various defects in what the board had already passed.

Issue 1, if passed by a majority of Ohio voters on Nov. 5, would scrap the state’s current politician-led redistricting panel and replace it with a 15-member citizen redistricting commission governed by rules similar to what’s already in place.

Wednesday’s party line board means Ohioans’ ballots will include language that Issue 1 opponents have celebrated and that proponents have framed as intentionally misleading. The final approval came just a few days before Ohio boards of elections are scheduled to begin mailing ballots to Ohio military personnel overseas.

In its Monday decision, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled two of 10 sections of the board’s previously-adopted language violated the Ohio Constitution’s requirement that the ballot language not be misleading.
