Ohio is sending troopers and $2.5 million to a city that has seen an influx of Haitian migrants

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The governor of Ohio will send law enforcement and millions of dollars in healthcare resources to the city of Springfield as it faces a surge in temporary Haitian migrants that has landed it in the national spotlight.

Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Tuesday he doesn’t oppose the Temporary Protected Status program under which some 15,000 Haitians have arrived in the city of about 59,000 people since 2020, but said the federal government must do more to help impacted communities.

His news conference was held just hours before the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump, where the divide over immigration policy was sure to be an issue.

On Monday, Republican Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost also drew attention to the crisis when he directed his office to research legal avenues — including filing a lawsuit — to stop the federal government from sending “an unlimited number of migrants to Ohio communities.”

I know Springfield and it has had some hard times but to Haitian immigrants it is heaven.
They have good steady jobs, they can get housing, they are no longer living in the poorest
country in the Western Hemisphere, and they can go to stores to buy food.

Sending money for healthcare too and asking for more federal resources to handle the influx of people. I’d probably ask for help too.

And yes I really know about Springfield, Ohio. It is one of the quintessential rust belt
cities where the industry left and it hit some hard times which can still be seen today.
The Haitian Immigrants there are a breath of fresh air adding much needed employees
to new businesses that have located in Springfield. Such as a metal working shop that
makes high quality parts for the auto and other industries. Those Haitians are breathing
new life into the City of Springfield and they are living their best lives with jobs, housing,
cars, schooling for their kids, and grocery stores where they can buy food so they don’t
need to eat dogs and cats. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere or it
was and Springfield is definitely a step up for them.

Anyway, the article as written is not too bad. Whether the traffic police are used to racially profile is another question. The governor’s comments are shockingly not too disgusting for a republican. I think this still seems ok-ish, but worth keeping an eye on because a republican really cannot be trusted.
