Former President Donald Trump plans to endorse J.D. Vance in Ohio's crowded Senate Republican primary, according to three sources with knowledge of his decision.
In recent days, Trump has begun calling donors and advisers to get their opinions on endorsing the Hillbilly Elegy author, but he held off under intense pressure from the rival Republican campaigns of Josh Mandel and Jane Timken, sources said.
"The Mandel people hit the roof," one Republican with knowledge of the discussions told NBC News, noting that Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan tried to dissuade Trump from the endorsement.

(94 posts)Mandel and Gibbons in particular are doing cartwheels to associate themselves with Trump and bashing Vance for distancing himself from Trump. It's sickening really, the way every Republican in Ohio is basically running against Biden, "woke" liberals, and Critical Race Theory, and supporting everything that Trumpers will approve of. But it is kind of fun to see them attack each other.

(17,975 posts)Coming from KY/OH/WV area strong candidates are given breaks getting into Ivy League schools in the hopes of diversifying their student population.
I went to high school in Mississippi. I am not sure that I would have entered the Engineering program at Purdue directly. I had several peers my freshman year who were not admitted in Engineering but were trying to make it in. Most failed.
Like JD Vance I benefitted from a parent (in his case a grandparent) who wanted to see me succeed in college. My family is from just across the border from JD Vance's family (Huntington WV and the smaller communities in WV and OH surrounding it). Like Vance I was the first to go to college in my immediate family (I had an uncle once removed who graduated before me from college).

(445 posts)By voters Ohio is maybe 56% to 44% Repukes to Democrats. The legislature has Repuke super majorities. Everything in State government has been controlled by Repukes for some time. The state supreme court has rejected the new legislature maps four times. A citizen's initiative won on a state wide ballot (i think twice) to prevent gerrymandering. Naturally, this is still opposed by the Repukes. The chief justice is of their party, and she is voting with the three Democratic justices against the other three Repukes. The legislature, at least some of it, has been threatening her with impeachment. She is the only non-hyper partisan in her party. Repukes hate it when someone is lawful.
Portman is the Repuke US senator retiring, he was a bushevik. He is warm shit in a suit. His Repuke replacement wannabes are beyond wretched (save for Dolan, from the family that owns the Cleveland baseball team). Bernie Moreno dropped out, his commercials were vile and insane. Mike Gibbons millionaire financier, wretched. Jane Timken, from a steel plant owning family, former state party chairman, also wretched. Mandel plain wretched, he is running a commercial where his face is overlayed over a black man in a marine uniform. They forgot to change the original's hand color. Vance is a millionaire employee of the financier Thiel. There are two Columbus businessmen running, who have not much campaign money. All except Dolan have praise Orange Caligula as their demigod.
Democratic congressman, Tim Ryan could win this race.
