title-Shontel Brown must resign as Cuyahoga County Democratic Party chair
byline-Editorial Board, cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer
snip-"The Democratic Party wields enormous political power in Cuyahoga County, often deciding elections with its endorsements, when voters go armed into polling places with the party card of preferred candidates. But Shontel Brown, as chair of the county party, and buttressed by a leadership group loyal to her, exercises even greater power to pick intraparty winners and losers.
By controlling the partys apparatus, Brown and her leadership team have the biggest say in which candidates get the backing, the money, the time and the endorsements of local labor and elected officials. They can influence, as well, who has the biggest ins with precinct clubs and other voter groups."
snip"One need look no further than Jane Timkens prompt action, in stepping down as chair of the Ohio Republican Party before announcing her bid for the Senate seat Rob Portman is vacating, to see why this conflict is a no-brainer. Timken understood that holding the states top party role while seeking to become the partys Senate nominee was a clear conflict of interest."

(21 posts)Sec. Marcia Fudge vacated when accepting a cabinet position. It's nothing personal against her, just asking her to follow precedent and step down as county party chair while running.

(34,195 posts)is this behavior typical of Browns behavior?

(21 posts)My guess is former state Sen. Nina Turner is the front-runner, much greater name recognition and a strong Progressive. So Brown probably doesn't want to step down as County Chair, then lose the primary, then be out of a pretty good gig. The article also mentioned that every office in the county goes through her, so many Dems with political ambitions of their own might feel pressure to not publicly go against her. That's unfair to the other candidates (2 at the moment).

very short article
snip-"Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Shontel Brown is adding Columbus-area Congresswoman Joyce Beatty to her list of former and current Democratic office holders backing her in the race for Ohios 11th Congressional District.".
I voted for Turner in 2014 for the Ohio Sec of State. I get she moved in other directions since then, but I cannot find out if she has built any local grass roots support since she was on the national stage. I also know that in some Democratic Black peoples groups, she is very unpopular b/c of her support for the "Bernie Bros". If she cannot tap into that AA volunteer & financial base, her candidacy looks unlikely to me.
I really liked & respected her work while she was a state legislature.
I have a knowledge base on Turner, I know next to nothing about Brown
