Storm to batter Mid-Atlantic and Northeast with heavy rain, coastal flooding and strong winds.
The storm lashed the shores between Charleston, S.C., and Morehead City, N.C., where has caused widespread power outages, coastal inundation of three to five feet in some areas, and heavy rains that could reach up to eight inches.
As the storm made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach around 11:10 p.m., observed wind gusts topped 90 mph in coastal North Carolina southeast of Wilmington. A weather station at Oak Island, North Carolina, reported sustained winds of 76 mph, and a gust to 87 mph. The storm, which had been a tropical storm throughout its near miss with Florida, regained hurricane status, its maximum sustained winds increasing to 85 mph. In Myrtle Beach, a historically large storm surge flooded roads and businesses, and several tornadoes were reported, some causing damage.
Snip.

We've reached the point in the storm where things are falling on the roof and slamming into the house. With the power being out now everything sounds much, much louder. What I am finding amazing is how quiet the dogs are. It's errie. I am hearing people drive down the road and that's baffling. The wind gusts are getting scary. Thankfully, they are infrequent.
How's everyone else doing? I hope everyone is staying safe.
Please check in.

(24,894 posts)looks like most issues are further east .. have had some bands of heavy rain pass through but short lived ... no wind issues as yet
of course the worst is expected 2am and later, but i hope to sleep through all that ..

(25,137 posts)I think the outer eye bands are about to come through. A couple of times it has sounded like the roof was going to lift off. I'm thinking about a couple of Absolute Citronella shots and a snuggle up with the pups, but the jury is still out on that.

(6,322 posts)I'm in Chapel Hill, but I grew up on the coast near Swansboro. Have family with property from South end if Oak Island northward to Atlantic Beach and inland.

(9,568 posts)to keep an eye on my pool's water level. If it gets too high I have to dump water or it could do damage.

(25,137 posts)I had a friend get hit by a tree limb during a storm. She got a concussion. I guess I will try to hold out for a couple of hours then the worst should be over for me. These lulls are giving me a false sense of safety. Thank goodness this storm is moving at a healthy clip. Good luck!

(9,568 posts)I'm afraid I'm just getting started. Living in Eastern NC I've done this so often I have a helmet to put on when I have to go out in these storms, and I have lots of trees to dodge. And the dog needs to go out too, so going to be a long night tonight.
