Political group mails deceptive flyers targeting NC House Democratic candidates
A conservative organization is sending out factually incorrect mailers to dissuade people from voting for Democratic North Carolina House candidates.
Citizens for a Better North Carolina, an independent expenditure group, has mailed out flyers targeting at least five Democrats running in competitive House races. The group is funded by the Good Government Coalition, a so-called 527 group headquartered in Springfield, Virginia.
The mailers frame the candidates as incumbents who opposed legislation to require satellite monitoring of sexual predators.
This refers to Senate Bill 20, the measure that resulted in a 12-week abortion ban in North Carolina. Among many provisions added to an unamendable conference report on the bill by Republican leaders just before it passed was a provision to expand satellite-based monitoring for violent and repeat sexual offenders.
NC Newsline has viewed mailers targeting five candidates:
- Dante Pittman, candidate for House District 24 (Wilson and Nash counties)
- Evonne Hopkins, candidate for House District 35 (Wake County)
- Safiyah Jackson, candidate for House District 37 (Wake County)
- Nicole Sidman, candidate for House District 105 (Mecklenburg County)
- Rep. Lindsey Prather, candidate for House District 115 (Buncombe County)
