Gerrymandering case for New Mexico's CD2 advances

The New Mexico Supreme Court has announced it’s asking a district court to hear a case involving gerrymandering that Republicans say happened when congressional District 2 was redrawn.

“At this point, the district court is going to be gathering evidence. They're going to be taking in evidence. The judge is going to be listening to the arguments. But what the Supreme Court said today was, look, we need as much evidence as possible, and they're basically giving a roadmap to the district judge as to what they want because they know that it's going to be going back up to them,” KOAT Legal Expert John Day said.

Republicans criticized the map for favoring Democrats and filed a lawsuit after they lost the district in the 2022 race by less than a percent.

Through searching legislative documents, we found that under the old congressional district map, 45% of registered voters in CD2 were Democrats and 55% were Republicans.

Under the new map, those numbers change to 53% Democrat and 47% Republican in the district.
