Mironov to step down after building Mercer into Democratic powerhouse

East Windsor Mayor Janice S. Mironov will not seek a fifth two-year term as Mercer County Democratic Chair, ending an eight-year tenure as leader of one of the state’s most successful county political organizations.

The leading candidate to succeed her is Jennifer Keyes-Maloney, a Ewing councilwoman and longtime Democratic stalwart.

Under Mironov’s tenure, no Republican currently holds a federal, state, county or municipal office elected in a partisan election; only Hudson County can claim a similar success. Democrats flipped the Hamilton mayor’s office in 2019 when Jeff Martin ousted Republican Kelly Yaede, and captured GOP council seats in Hamilton, Hightstown, Hopewell Borough and Hopewell Township.

In the 16th legislative district, Mironov helped Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick) secure the Democratic nomination for State Senate. Zwicker flipped the seat held by retiring Republican Christopher Bateman (R-Branchburg).

The first time I ever spoke to him, he was doing just that, at a community fair, although he was relatively unknown and a long shot. I viewed him as a Rush Holt wannabe, but he proved to be very much more than that.

I got to know him better. He's a remarkable man, a great asset to the Princeton area community where he hosts Science on Saturday at PPPL each winter.

I will of course vote for our nominee Adam Hamawy, but it will be bittersweet. I'm pleased to vote for the combat physician/patriot who saved Tammy Duckworth's life when she was wounded in the Iraq war, but I wish I was voting for a physicist. (In the primary I voted for a neuroscientist; we have a district filled with highly educated impressive candidates. My guy, Sam Wang came in third out of 12.)
