The Trump effect is about to cost a popular New Hampshire Republican his job after more than 40 years in officeTOM BOGGIONI 25 NOV 2018 AT 08:54 ET
According to the report, Secretary of State Bill Gardner will be facing ouster when the now-Democratic controlled legislature convenes on December 5th to vote on his continuing tenure. In New Hampshire, lawmakers select the states secretary of state every two years.
With the legislature now dominated by Democrats following the blue wave midterm election that was seen as a major backlash against President Donald Trump, the 77-year-old Gardner may not see himself seated again for a 22nd term.
At issue is his close connection to Trump.
According to the report, Democrats fumed when he agreed to participate in Trumps controversial voter fraud panel then again when he supported legislation tightening voter residency requirements. In an era of intense scrutiny on state elections officials and heightened politicization of their offices Gardners critics appear to be catching up to him.
A Democratic leader said Gardner has only himself to blame.

(2,565 posts)....to practice a little bi-partisanship. On further reading
about the jerk's participation and apparent fondness for
voter suppression efforts, let alone his ties to Trump, I say
send his fat ass down the road. Particularly if the Sec. of State
has anything to do with redistricting after the 2020 census.

(10,749 posts)since I live here. Spouse keeps me posted.
I had always thought Bill Gardner was pretty much a normal republican. Guess not. Tough. Dems are in charge now.
Colin van Ostern ran for governor a few years ago and I went to a house thing where I heard him speak. Sounds like a good guy. I'd like to see him as governor at some point, and the SoS job seems like a good job for someone normal to keep things on track.
There are only two reps and two Senators here, so there's not a lot you can do about redistricting. And on the local level it's pretty much town based, so there's not much fuckery that can be done there either.

(2,565 posts)...it may have occurred to me that New Hampshire would be difficult to gerrymander.
It seems to me that with your 'first in the nation" mentality regarding elections, voter
suppression wouldn't be very vigorous either. Thanks for the input.

(10,575 posts)This guy has used his "I'm bipartisan!" as both shield and cudgel for decades.
Not going to get my hopes up though, there may be enough centrist Dems + the GOP, where he could eke out another win.
