SPOTLIGHT RACE: Melanie Scheible for AZ-SD09
Melanie grew up right here in Nevada. She has proudly served in the State Senate since 2018. She is the product of Nevada’s K-12 public education system and is a graduate of Reno High School. She received her B.A. in Public Policy from Stanford University with Honors. After working for two years as a policy analyst, Melanie attended Columbia Law School, where she received her juris doctor, as a Public Interest Fellow.
During law school, Melanie worked with Federal Administrative Law judges as a mediator in employment discrimination cases. She also assisted in the pro bono representation of clients in civil rights litigation. Before returning to Nevada after law school, Melanie spent time in Kampala, Uganda doing legal work for the nonprofit human rights group Chapter Four. She worked to promote public health, advocate for the LGBT community, and combat corruption.
Upon returning to Nevada, Melanie began a distinguished career at the Clark County DA’s office. Over six years as a prosecutor, she handled more than 1,000 felony cases, ranging from complex gun crimes and sexual assaults to murders. Notably, Melanie was one of the first attorneys to charge a “revenge porn” case under the statute enacted by the 2015 Nevada Legislature.
Today, Melanie brings that same passion for a fair and effective legal system to her work in private practice as an attorney. Whether in the DA’s office or in her current practice, Melanie understands how the law touches the lives of everyone in our community.
Since her election in 2018, Melanie has proudly served the residents of District 9. In the Senate, she has risen to key leadership roles, currently serving as the Chief Majority Whip and the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Natural Resources Committee.
Melanie is an active member of the Las Vegas community and serves on the Silver State Equality Board of Advisors. She lives in District 9 with her husband, their dog, and her calico cat. Melanie and her husband are excited to be expanding their family as they prepare to welcome their first child.
