LINCOLN A legislative race in northern Lancaster County features an incumbent looking to tackle and learn more about top issues for constituents and a challenger who wants to bring his life experiences to the Legislature.
State Sen. Beau Ballard of Lincoln, 30, is seeking election to the Legislative District 21 seat. Then-Gov. Pete Ricketts, jointly with then-Gov.-elect Jim Pillen, appointed Ballard to the seat beginning in January 2023 to succeed former State Sen. Mike Hilgers of LIncoln, who was elected attorney general.
Ballard is originally from Raymond, where his family has a vineyard and winery. He started a bakery in downtown Lincoln with a friend out of college and worked as a legislative staffer for Hilgers.
His opponent, Seth Derner, 49, is the founder and senior consultant for Vivayic, a company that designs training solutions for other companies or universities. He is from the Sandhills near Wheeler County and is a former ag and shop teacher.
