NE-LD45: Eastern Sarpy County Legislative District 45 race features Sen. Rita Sanders (R), Sarah Centineo (D)
BELLEVUE — A legislative race in eastern Sarpy County features an incumbent looking to use her expertise to dive into issues she’s already started and a challenger looking to uplift her own medical and educational background.
State Sen. Rita Sanders, 66, is seeking reelection to the Legislative District 45 seat, which includes Bellevue and Offutt Air Force Base. Sanders served as mayor of Bellevue for eight years, worked for former U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., and has been a commercial real estate developer.
Her opponent, Sarah Centineo, 50, has been on the Bellevue school board since 2016 and was a bedside nurse for 27 years, mostly in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units at Children’s Nebraska in Omaha. She is now an attorney who represents people bringing cases involving medical negligence....
Centineo said she has been a caretaker her whole life as one of five children. While working as a nurse, she saw the impact of financial struggles on families as well as inequities and prejudices within the health care system, prompting her to advocate for people she said couldn’t always advocate for themselves.
