Petitioners to expand abortion turn in signatures, 12-week ban effort also expected to turn in signatures
A group aiming to expand abortion rights until fetal viability typically around 24 weeks through a constitutional amendment has turned in signatures to get its proposal onto the November ballot.
Jackie Ourada, public information officer for Nebraskas Secretary of State, said the office is also expecting signatures from a group thats aiming to enshrine the states current ban on most abortions past 12 weeks, while allowing for future restrictions.
The campaign trying to legalize medical cannabis has also reached out to the office to coordinate submitting their signatures.
Each group needs a little over 123,000 signatures, 10% of the states registered voters, to make it onto the ballot. That needs to include signatures from at least 5% of registered voters in 38 of the states 93 counties.
The Secretary of State will verify and count the signatures before declaring which petitions have made the ballot. The process could take several weeks.
