MISSOULA, Mont. | Authorities say a black bear somehow locked itself inside a Montana home and then nestled onto a closet shelf that wasn't too hard, wasn't too soft, but just right for a nap.
Missoula County sheriff's officials say the bear just yawned when deputies knocked on the window and unlocked the door in an attempt to coax it to leave Friday morning.
They had to call Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department officials, who tranquilized the bear so it could be re-located.
Sheriff's officials say in a Facebook post that deputies responded at 5:45 a.m. to a call that a bear opened the door to the Butler Creek's mudroom and somehow locked the deadbolt once inside.

(23,988 posts)And, this happens more often than you might think. One of the primary reasons officials tell folks to lock their doors is to keep wildlife from coming inside. We had a bear enter our shop building behind our house a few years ago. He raised all kinds of hell before he found his way out. He left a pile of bear poo on the floor and a nose print on the door more than 6 feet up which was a good indicator of his generous size. Homeowners insurance would not cover the damage he left in his wake...apparently one needs a wildlife damage rider on their policy for insurance to give a damn. Who knew? A week later that same bear got his head stuck in a dog door at our neighbors house.

(23,988 posts)So heres another one...I was driving to the grocery store one evening...and Im passing a little house with its garage door open and I see a bear on its hind legs working the door between the garage and the house like hes a person and hes done it before. Bad idea to leave the garage door open...ever. He looked just like a person trying to get into the house. Crazy! I didn't think the people were home so I just kept going. I live in a busy wildlife corridor and most of us live with bears without issue. When I came home from the store, Mr. Bear had moved on and the house looked intact.
Nice to see you GD. Hope you got moved okay.

(4,321 posts)I had a friend come visit for 10 days so I broke up the packing and moving part. I packed half of the house before she got here so while she was here I was on vacation with her. She left early yesterday and since then it has been balls to the wall.
Nice to see you too MM.
