Kansas City polling places beef up security measures ahead of election

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Local polling places are seeing a steady flow of voters with Election Day less than two weeks away.

However, the business of running elections has become riskier, with poll workers facing harassment and violent threats in recent years.

“We had an irate voter come in [earlier this year]. She was very aggressive and actually came behind our judges and they felt very unsafe,” Shawn Kieffer, a director with the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners said.

That prompted a response from the Kansas City Council, which unanimously passed a new law in July making it illegal to threaten an election official with force, violence, or intimidation, impede them from doing their job and use offensive, abusive or threatening language within 25 feet of a polling place.
