Daniel Volkers gets two year sentence for racist St. Cloud hatchet attack
When a SWAT team staked out Daniel Volkers' St. Cloud home in February, they probably didn't have much of an idea for why the 51-year-old man had done what he'd done.
They did not have to wait long or probe deeply to discover his motivation. When police asked about his attempted hatchet attack earlier that day, Volkers called his victim "dirty," a "monkey," and used a "derogatory term" for black people an estimated 30 times during a 10-minute interview.
The St. Cloud Times reports Volkers pleaded guilty this week to second-degree assault and fourth-degree assault, with both charges enhanced with a "motivated by bias" stipulation. Volkers received a 27-month sentence, and will get credit for the nearly six months he's spent in jail since his arrest.
Volkers has previous convictions for DWI, terroristic threats, and has twice been found guilty of violating an order for protection against him.
