Univ. of Minnesota student falls 5 stories from apartment balcony, critically hurt in apparent stunt

An apparent stunt gone awry sent a 19-year-old University of Minnesota student falling from a fifth-floor apartment balcony on the edge of campus over the weekend, police said Monday.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Catherine Michal said the young man has so far survived his injuries from the incident, which was reported to law enforcement shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday at the FloCo Fusion apartments in the 1000 block of University Avenue SE., just east of Interstate 35.

The student was taken to nearby Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was last reported to be in critical condition, police said.

Authorities were withholding the man's identity until family notifications were made.
