In a new Free Press poll, U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., appears to hold a narrow lead over his Republican challenger, businessman John James, heading into the final three weeks of what has been a hard-fought campaign between the two.
The poll, which was done by EPIC-MRA of Lansing for the Free Press and its outstate partners, shows Peters up 45% to 39% for James, with 5% supporting a third party candidate and 11% undecided. That compares to a 45%-41% edge for Peters a month ago.
With a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, Peters' 6-percentage-point advantage suggests he holds at least a narrow lead over James, though he is lagging Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's level of support in the race against President Donald Trump in the state.
In the same poll, which was conducted between last Thursday and Monday of this week, Biden led Trump 48%-39%. The Peters-James race is one of the few nationally where Republicans are hopeful of defeating a sitting Democratic senator.
