Michigan Humane Society updates name, mission to focus on pets and people

If you look at the new design — two circles and a triangle — just right, you might see a face. Whether it belongs to a person or a pet depends on how you look at it.

The state’s oldest animal welfare organizations get a new name and logo this week.

Michigan Humane, the new name for the Michigan Humane Society, just rolled out its updated look and mission, which emphasizes that the nonprofit aims to drive change in a "community where everyone, people and pet, are healthy and safe."

It's a substantial pursuit during a pandemic.

Founded in 1877 as the Michigan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the organization started to protect Detroit's workhorses, and the women and children who were the victims of domestic violence.

"Our pets are only as healthy as the communities in which they live," Pepper said. "That’s why we believe in a better world where both animals and humans are treated with respect, kindness and consideration — a more humane Michigan.
