A day after thousands of people converged on the Capitol to protest Gov. Gretchen Whitmers latest stay-at-home order, Republicans in the Legislature followed suit, introducing bills that would strip powers away from the governor.
The bills come at a time when Whitmer has tightened stay-at-home restrictions, which have shuttered businesses and are keeping people in their homes as a way to try and stop the spread of coronavirus.
The bills introduced in both the House and Senate would repeal the 1945 Emergency Powers of the Governor Act, which gives wide power to the governor to declare a state of emergency in times of great public crisis.
Another bill would amend the Emergency Management Act of 1976, which allows the governor to declare a state of emergency for up to 28 days, to reduce the number of allowable days to 14.

(38,197 posts)a veto with a certain number of votes or have some other technicality or loophole to go around a veto. A lot of places have that.
Republicans do things that way where I live, plus thumb their noses at the courts when they get told they went overboard. They use stuff like that to force what they want, for the time being, just to stick it to a Democrat. They will come right back around, with rules like that, and change it back if one of them is in charge. They just go right ahead and use the laws, loopholes, and technicalities wily nily to do whatever they want whenever they want. I don't know why they get to do that, but in at least some states, they do all kinds of procedures to get their way....and they get away with it.
