HYANNIS The Kmart parking lot on Route 132 in Hyannis was practically empty Monday for the store's going-out-of-business sale. ... Still, a trickle of customers made their way to the store, where huge banners proclaimed an inventory blowout.
Everything at least 10% to 70% off lowest ticketed price one sign read. ... Nothing held back, another proclaimed.
Signs advertise sales at the Kmart in Capetown Plaza, which is set to close after 49 years of operation in Hyannis.
What was held back was information from Kmarts parent company, Transformco. There was no word, no reply to telephone calls or emails about the exact closing date of the national discount store in Hyannis.
The Cape store is the last Massachusetts location for the once-mighty retail giant. ... Signs inside the store heralded savings on everything from soap to shoes, clothing to jewelry, sporting goods to patio furniture. Discounts on clothing hovered around 30%. Greeting cards were 50% off. Jewelry was discounted even more.
