EASTON – A Boston attorney has filed a Title IX complaint seeking a federal investigation of Stonehill College, saying her client’s rights to an equal education were violated after she reported being raped.

Wendy Murphy represents a Stonehill student who says she was raped by a Stonehill student athlete on Feb. 15 off campus in a private Easton residence not owned by the college. The complaint was filed July 30 with the Office of Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education.

The complaint claims that Stonehill, through its handling of the reported sexual assault, violated the student’s federal civil rights under Title IX. It was also filed on behalf of all women students at Stonehill, Murphy said.

College students who believe their schools mishandled their allegations of sexual assault have increasingly opted to use Title IX, a broad law that bans gender-based discrimination in federally funded programs, to press institutions for stronger action.
