Centuries-old time capsule being removed from State House...

The capsule is believed to contain artifacts that date to 1795 when it was first buried under the cornerstone of the building by Governor Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and William Scollay, based on records found by the Patrick administration detailing a ceremony when the capsule was buried.

The capsule was last unearthed during emergency repairs to the State House in 1855. It was put back in place when the cornerstone was reset.

Officials showed one of the coins to a gaggle of reporters who were observing. It was silver-colored but it was not legible. Hatchfield also showed a cellphone photo of the box she had taken from her vantage point underneath the block. The photo showed a green box.

IOU's from the federal Government.

Ironically Congress was dissing Germans.
On January 13, 1795, Congress considered a proposal, not to give German any official status, but merely to print the federal laws in German as well as English. During the debate, a motion to adjourn failed by one vote. The final vote rejecting the translation of federal laws, which took place one month later, is not recorded.

Time capsule buried by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams unearthed in Boston
A time capsule buried by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams in 1795 was extracted Thursday after hours of chipping away at a stone block.

The copper container was the size of a cigar box and green from oxidation, The Boston Globe reports, and was inside the cornerstone of the Massachusetts Statehouse. The capsule is thought to be the oldest such artifact found in the United States, and was removed once before, in 1855, when the building had to undergo emergency repairs. It was placed in the cornerstone when it was reset.

After the capsule was unearthed this time, it was taken to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, accompanied by a police escort. While some coins that were thrown into the plaster for good luck fell out during the removal, no one is quite sure what's inside the container, and the museum plans to X-ray the capsule over the weekend. - - Catherine Garcia
