Ellen,
Last week, a mob of President Trumps armed supporters overran the U.S. Capitol in an act of insurrection.
They sought to overturn the will of the voters of our country by storming the Capitol, committing acts of armed violence and rioting, in an attempt to stop the certification of the election results.
This was a direct attack on our democracy. It is shameful and despicable, but thankfully they did not succeed. That very same day we returned to the Capitol and finished certifying the Electoral College votes.
In spite of the threats posed, I am so proud Members of the Senate and House upheld their oaths to defend the Constitution.
Ellen, January 6th will be a dark day in our history. But it will also be remembered as a day when Democracy prevailed.
When President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris are sworn into office, we must begin to heal the wounds of these past four years. That will take all our energy, patience, and care. I hope you will join me in recognizing the valor shown by so many during the attack, and praying for those that were injured or died as a result of Tuesdays horrendous event.
House Democrats will do our part, using our House Majority to elevate what is best of America and promote cooperation to confront our greatest challenges and threats. I hope Republicans will join us in that effort.
Sincerely,
Congressman Steny Hoyer
House Majority Leader
