Woodstock 50 could move iconic festival out of New York for first time. Woodstock 50 may be reborn again
in Maryland. July 26, 2019, USA Today.
Officials from Howard County, Maryland, are working with Woodstock 50 organizers to hold the proposed golden anniversary festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion amphitheater. Scott Peterson, a spokesperson for Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, confirmed to the Poughkeepsie Journal that Howard County is working with Merriweather Post Pavilion and Woodstock 50 promoters to make sure this historic event happens.
The event, as originally planned, is scheduled to begin three weeks from Friday. Peterson said county officials are working to accommodate them as quickly as possible. A spokesperson for Woodstock could not confirm anything or comment. A golden anniversary celebration of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, Woodstock 50 is scheduled to be held Aug. 16-18, but the event has no venue, no permit and tickets have yet to go on sale.
The Merriweather Post Pavilion has a capacity of just under 20,000. Originally, organizers had hoped Woodstock 50 could have a capacity of 150,000 attendees, a number that has decreased as planning has evolved. The most recent incarnation of the festival plan, when it proposed to be held in the town of Vernon, New York, called for a 65,000 capacity.
Hurdles to the festival's planning have often centered around capacity and how organizers would ensure the safety of attendees and the surrounding town's residents. The possibility that Woodstock 50 could head south from New York is the latest twist in a saga that has been unfolding for months...
