FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN COULD BE A BILLION-DOLLAR BLOW TO MARYLAND.
'The federal government shutdown which President Trump said Friday could last months or years, according to a report from Axios is hitting many Marylanders in their pocketbooks.
Based on Comptrollers Office estimates, federal employees who live in Maryland are losing between $75 million to $100 million per week.
Thats based on data that includes 145,000 federal jobs that are based in the Free State, and 325,000 Marylanders who work for the federal government at some time during the year.
Federal jobs represent 5.4 percent of all jobs in the state, compared with 4.6 percent in Virginia and 26 percent in the District of Columbia. The national average is 1.9 percent.
Sixty percent of those jobs are in the defense industry.
Marylanders receive about $26 billion in wages from the federal government, and the state collects about $1.9 billion in state withholding from federal employees.'
