A Carmel man saved his 4-year-old son after they both fell through the ice Friday morning, but he drowned shortly after.
Kevin Howell, 51, of Carmel, was on a walk with his son when they crossed over part of Etna Pond, and they both fell through the ice at about 6:30 a.m. Friday, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said.
Howell got his son out of the water and onto the ice. He told the boy to run the third of a mile home and get his mother.
Once the boy told his mom, she called 911, grabbed an anchor and rope and ran down to the water. She secured the rope to the shore and went onto the ice to help her husband, but broke through the ice herself, DIF&W said.
