As many of us were watching the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, perhaps listening to youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman speak of striving to forge a union with purpose, to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man, the chair of the Maine Republican Party was preparing an email with some very different themes.
On the afternoon of the inauguration, a note arrived in the inboxes of those of us subscribed to the Maine GOP email list with the subject Lets take Maine and America BACK.
Demi Kouzounas, the same GOP chair who has been spreading conspiracy theories about the election results and COVID-19, made clear that in her mind no unity is possible, doubling down on some of the worst rhetoric of former President Donald Trump and making clear that his dangerous political legacy didnt end as his plane flew south to Florida.
In the email, the same state party whose vice chair cheered the insurrectionists at the U.S. Capitol earlier this month on social media accused Democrats of staging destructive protests.

(10,172 posts)And I live in NH! Seriously - spend a day at the (wonderful!) Fryeburg Fair, or 10 minutes in Skowhegan, and meet folks from The Deep North. Now that paper mills and manufacturing are in eclipse, there's not a lot of money around, and plenty of time to repeat the old lies to each other.

(92,335 posts)Montana. It's really awful.
I spent a lot of my childhood in Maine and had family members in politics there. I wince whenever I hear about destructive legislatures in states I really liked when I lived in them. I was kind of thinking of moving there but if it isn't any better than what I have in Montana, never mind.

(5,276 posts)Its why Republicans, many ex Republicans, are on CNN and MSNBC all the time. They have driven hordes of moderates to leaving.
Why everyday Citizens cannot grasp that Democrats will help them more than Republicans is puzzling.
Some of it must be racial panic as they see the racial balance changing where soon Whites may be the minority.
And again hordes of Whites would be stunned if they took a DNA test. I am white but both my Sister and I are about 1.5 % Black.....not hard to guess it came from my Maternal Grandfathers ancestry.
