FRANKFORT, Ky. Government funding would be cut off to Planned Parenthood affiliates in Kentucky under legislation that passed the state Senate on Wednesday.
Senate Bill 8 would create funding tiers for money coming into Kentucky for family planning through the federal Public Health Service Act so that entities providing comprehensive primary and preventative health services, along with family planning services, would be first in line.
This would place Planned Parenthood, which does not provide comprehensive health services, at the back of the line for federal family planning dollars, said state Sen. Max Wise, the Campbellsville Republican who sponsored the bill.
The bill passed 31-6 and now heads to the House for consideration.

Rejecting passionate pleas from supporters of reproductive rights, the Republican-controlled Iowa Senate voted Thursday to block public funding to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.Sen. Joe Bolkcom, D-Iowa City, praised Planned Parenthood, saying it does more than any other medical provider to prevent unplanned pregnancies.
We have a high quality provider that patients like and they want to continue to have access to those services like anyone would," Bolkcom said. "This bill says 'no' to these women. The real purpose of this bill is to punish Planned Parenthood because they provide services to women seeking legal access to an abortion. What is ironic about Senate File 2 is that it will result in thousands of unplanned pregnancies and many, many more abortions."
