Kentucky Democrat 'enraged' by House resolution backing Trump's immigration emergency

FRANKFORT – Freshman Rep. Nima Kulkarni of Louisville and three other Democrats on Friday objected to a resolution quickly adopted by the House late Thursday commending President Trump for declaring a national immigration emergency.

Kulkarni is an immigrant and an immigration attorney. She's the first Indian-American to serve in the Kentucky legislature. She said she was shocked when the resolution was quickly adopted without calling for a voice vote or an electronic roll call.

When she later realized the resolution would be sent to Congress as the sentiment of the entire Kentucky House, she said, “I was enraged.”

Kulkarni told her colleagues Friday, “Painting all immigrants with the same criminal brush as murderers, rapists, drug runners and thieves — as that resolution so grievously does — reinforces the fear and hate-mongering that is rising in our country today.”
