LGBT students escorted out of the Capitol after complaint of transgender kids in restroom
Over 150 LGBT students were escorted out of the Iowa Capitol on Thursday after a group of transgender kids refused to leave the mens restroom and use gender-neutral bathrooms instead, according to Iowa Safe Schools, an LGBT student advocacy group.
Middle- and high-school students draped in rainbow flags toured the Capitol in the morning as part of an annual Day at the Capitol event by Iowa Safe Schools. The event allows students to speak with legislators and learn how policies are created.
About 12:30 p.m., Iowa State Patrol and Capitol security received a report of multiple people using the mens restroom in the Iowa State Capitol. The reporting person was concerned because the people in the bathroom were an adult and minor females, according to Iowa State Patrol.
On three separate occasions, Capitol security asked the adult and minors to stop using the mens restroom and told them they could use the gender-neutral bathrooms on the upper level, according to Iowa State Patrol.
