Iowa Democratic and GOP party chairs spar over health care
The chairmen of the state Democratic and Republican parties held dueling news conferences Thursday to highlight what they both say will be a central issue in the race for U.S. Senate: health care.
Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Mark Smith scheduled a tour around the state to discuss Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernsts voting record on health care. Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann held a conference call with reporters to defend Ernsts record and argue that the Democratic candidates proposals will harm Iowans.

Democrats attack Ernsts voting record: Smith said Ernst spent her half-decade in Washington working in concert with Mitch McConnell, Big Pharma and special interests, voting time and again to take our health care away. These votes against health care coverage for seniors, women, families and workers are a defining issue in Sen. Ernsts political career and an effort that took shape long before she set foot in Washington.
Smith and other Democrats are citing, among other votes, the many times Ernst joined with the GOP majority on legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Most of those bills did not offer a substitute health plan that protected Americans with pre-existing conditions.
