Vigil today at 5PM in Mt. Pleasant following ICE raid
email from Center for Workers Justice:
Yesterday, the small Iowa community of Mt. Pleasant was torn apart by an ICE (Immigration Customs and Enforcement) raid. ICE picked up 32 workers from their factory jobs, separating them from their children, spouses, and loved ones. The workers are not a threat to anyone; in fact, they are a vital part of the economy and fabric of this small Iowa community. They are neighbors and volunteers, parents and taxpayers.
This is an urgent call to action; the next 48 hours are extremely important. ) There is a vigil TODAY at 5pm at the Henry County Courthouse at Washington and Main Street in Mt. Pleasant. We need to be there. Show solidarity with the workers and families. Demand that ICE release the workers on bond so they have the fundamental right to due process, to gather the information and legal assistance to defend themselves.
Yesterday, several of us from CWJ went to Mt. Pleasant to stand with the network of local churches and residents who are developing an emergency response to the crisis this raid has created. The community there is working to gather information, work with families, and has contacted lawyers to address short-term representation needs. of all those affected and has contacted lawyers so they can help to get everyone out of jail and thus avoid their deportation.
In addition to todays rally, it is urgent to collect money to pay for lawyers, bonds, and basic human needs for families that have lost their breadwinner. We expect to receive a list soon of particular supplies that families need, and will gather them at CWJ. Keep an eye out well be sending more information soon!
