Democrat John Norris announces campaign for governor

John Norris, a long-time Democratic activist and appointee, will run for governor in 2018.

Norris has been exploring a candidacy for the last few months, attending party events and testing his message and appeal with party activists. He’s the sixth Democrat to officially announce candidacy in the race.

He’ll embark Saturday on a six-day, 22-event tour of the state to roll out his campaign message, which he said will emphasize rural revitalization, higher wages, health care and education.

“Right now, government works pretty well for the rich and powerful, but our leaders are leaving too many Iowans behind,” Norris said in a statement announcing his campaign. “It’s time we focus on growing opportunity for all Iowans.”
