Waterloo superintendent to propose $165m school merger ballot vote at next board meeting

WATERLOO, Iowa — Waterloo Community School District Superintendent Dr. Jared Smith said he will recommend the Board of Education vote to move forward with putting a $165 million measure on the November 5th ballot.

Earlier this week, a group of concerned residentsfiled a petition of 2,428 signatures to put the measure on the ballot.

The school board approved a plan in July that will turn the city’s two high schools, Waterloo West and Waterloo East, into a single institution by the end of the decade. If constructed, it would be the only high school campus in the State of Iowa that offers on-site career and technical education to every student.

Since December, the district has held 14 town hall meetings and work sessions to engage the community and assess the feasibility of the project.
