Our classroom was in the basement of the Chapel with only one door. Because of that fire they closed our classroom as a fire hazard and transferred us to public schools for the remainder of the year.

I was a student at a Catholic grammar school in Chicago so their horror hit home for me.

I still don't know why they didn't get out.

called "To sleep with the Angels", which explains much. Basically, several nuns told students to stay in seats, pray and wait for directions from the principal. So sad.

She was 19 when the fire happened. Her favorite teacher was the nun who died in the 4th grade classroom.
