Rauner 'generally supportive' of gun crimes plan but has questions
Gov. Bruce Rauner said Friday that he is "generally supportive" of efforts to increase penalties for repeat gun felons, but he said he wants to "have a conversation" about a proposal that stalled this week.
Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson traveled to Springfield to push for the plan Thursday after asking lawmakers for months to help the city in its fight against street violence. But it was approved by a Senate committee with just one vote to spare and went no further. Republicans voted against it.
Rauner said that he only recently had been briefed on the bill and that he wanted to take time to negotiate parts of it.
"The bill itself has multiple components, some of which I have questions about, some I think I agree with," Rauner said. "So we're going to study and have a discussion about it."
