Unexploded WWII-era bombs found near popular Oahu beaches
Hawaii officials are advising beachgoers to be careful after the military discovered six unexploded mortars and grenades around popular beach areas on the east side of Oahu. The military used the areas for aerial bombing and training activities around World War Il, leaving behind munition that could detonate if disturbed.
The Air Force has posted dozens of no trespassing signs at Bellows Air Force Station in Waimanalo around the former Large Bomb Range, used during the 1930s, and the former Urban Warfare Training Facility, Sven Lindstrom from the Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office, told USA TODAY. The station is surrounded by beaches including Lanikai Beach and Sherwood Forest Beach.
This area should be off-limits to the public, however, it is known to be commonly used by the homeless and other trespassers and can be easily accessed from the adjacent public beach and from Waimanalo town, Lindstrom said.
Unexploded ordnance, like grenades, rockets and bombs, have the potential to explode if they are disturbed or removed, but shouldnt go off on their own, according to Lindstrom.
