Decatur Democrat Escorted From Podium In Abortion Debate: Video
ATLANTA -- One of this year's most contentious legislative bills was passed by the state House last week but not before some House Democrats publicly shunned their GOP colleagues, and not before one Decatur Democrat had to be removed from the House speaking well. State Rep. Renitta Shannon (D-Decatur) had to be escorted from the well by her colleagues before House security personnel moved in. Shannon was speaking in opposition to House Bill 481, known as the Heartbeat Bill, which would protect unborn children from abortions once a heartbeat has been detected.
Shannon's speaking time had expired, but she was obviously prepared to go on speaking, despite the fact that the Georgia House does not allow filibustering. Her speaking papers flying, Shannon was eventually escorted from the well amid admonitions from House Speaker David Ralston.
The bill now moves onto the Senate.
During hours of emotional debate, some House Democrats turned their backs on the bill's primary sponsor, state Rep. Ed Setzler (R-Acworth), as he spoke in favor of his bill. The bill passed by a vote of 93-73.
