Hillsborough (Tampa) School Board votes to delay in-person classes (online for first four weeks)

Hillsborough School Board votes to delay in-person classes
Tampa Bay Times, 8/6/2020

School in Hillsborough County will be all-virtual for the first four weeks, the School Board decided in a 5-2 vote on Thursday. The school year will start on Aug. 24 as previously planned.

After hearing from a panel of medical experts who predicted that, at best, schools would be opening and closing because of COVID-19 cases, the majority decided it would be better to buy time until the community infection rate drops to acceptable levels.

Board members Cindy Stuart and Melissa Snively cast the two dissenting votes.

Teachers have been coming into the schools since Friday for planning and training. Since March, Davis acknowledged Thursday, there have been close to 300 cases of COVID reported at the schools, most affecting staff.
