Florida voters losing faith in DeSantis, new poll finds

Once one of the most popular governors in the country, Ron DeSantis is losing his standing among Florida voters as the state’s coronavirus outbreak reaches new, alarming levels.

DeSantis, among several Republican governors who pushed in May to quickly reopen their states from pandemic-driven lock-downs, has seen his approval rating dip as Florida experiences one of the worst outbreaks in the country. On Thursday, as the Florida Department of Health reported a state record 173 COVID-19 deaths, a new poll released by Quinnipiac University put DeSantis’ favorability rating at a new low, with 41 percent of voters approving of his job performance and 52 percent disapproving.

The numbers reflect a 31-point drop in DeSantis’ approval rating from a poll the university conducted in late April.

“A popular governor has gone to a not-terribly-popular governor in a couple months,” said Tim Malloy, a polling analyst for Quinnipiac.

Bigly. I am seeing former trumpy seniors here in FL turn on him like never before. And, just to throw it out there - there are many seniors (like my 92 year old dad) who never bought DeSatan's BS ever....

We need them.

Seniors tend to watch tv, and have a sense of the news. Hardcore trumpers - might be more oblivious.

Seeing pandemic messages among seniors, and news in general. Talk to one another, also. They may shift more readily, than some busy hardcore trumpers.

Elections with 40%. Hard to fund raise when sitting at this level. Lots of time to see another 5-10% drop.

The hospitality industry is very cliquish and bar owners and their loyal patrons all know each other. The ones I’m thinking of are white, in their 20s-30s, and are furious with the order to shut down the bars. They see restaurants serving food and liquor but they aren’t shut down. They see gyms open but they aren’t shut down. Hell, many strip clubs in FL are open if they serve food.

DeSantis has been all over the place on this and it’s something that the FLA Dems and Biden could exploit at a micro level.

These same people have been furious about the unemployment compensation situations. The bartenders and wait staff have really suffered due to the GOP ineptitude in FL. If they could peel away some of these people from Trump (and yes, many are Trumpsters) that could help cut the margins and in FL, to win you have to cut the margins.

So aside from the obvious disapproval of the handling of the coronavirus on the macro level, there are places that Biden that can make gains (and the FL Dems if they are creative enough).
