Delaware Sen. Sarah McBride introduces paid family, medical leave bill. What it would do

Sen. Sarah McBride announced a bill on Wednesday to ensure Delaware workers can get up to 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave.

Senate Bill 1 would create a statewide paid family and medical leave insurance program, paid for by payroll contributions, for certain life events such as serious illness, a new child or adjusting to military deployment. People could receive up to 80% of their average weekly wages.

The program would be funded by less than 1% of an employee's weekly pay, split evenly by the employee and employer.

Contributions would start in 2023 and the benefits would be available in 2024, should the bill pass this session.
