Newtown officer wins arbitration on stress claim after Sandy Hook

NEWTOWN -- Police officer Thomas Bean continues to struggle with effects of post-traumatic stress disorder after the Sandy Hook massacre.

But one thing the 40-year-old cop will not have to fight is the town over his long-term disability benefit.

An arbitration board has ordered Newtown to pay 50 percent of his salary until his retirement, which would total $380,000 over 11 years.

The town had notified Bean that it would stop making long-term disability payments to him after June, because its insurance carrier limits emotional disability benefits to two years.
