Controversial slaughterhouse ban to be on the ballot

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - “These lambs are just like dogs and cats in their ability to feel pain and suffer,” said Natalie Fulton, spokesperson for Pro Animal Future, an animal advocacy group.

The group supports Initiative 309, which would shut down Denver’s only slaughterhouse. While only Denver County can vote, the outcome will have a direct impact to the Western slope.

“We have tons of neighbors around here that are currently sheep producers, and it’ll definitely affect their way of life and affect them economically,” said Brady Pearson, Mesa County Cattlemen’s Association President.

If passed, Pearson explains the lamb would be imported, making lamb more expensive for local consumers.
