Mayor London Breed's boyfriend hired to perform at event funded by her Dream Keeper program
An Oakland hip-hop artist dating Mayor London Breed appears to have been paid $2,500 to perform during San Franciscos official Juneteenth concert that was sponsored by her signature city initiative.
The mayors boyfriend, Dustin Sharpe, was among the paid performers listed in a newly unearthed talent budget for the event held outside City Hall in June. An event producer working with the San Francisco Human Rights Commission to organize the concert submitted the budget to the agency for approval. The Chronicle obtained the budget in a batch of documents released by the city Thursday evening in response to a public records request filed weeks ago.
The records show Sharpe, a member of the Oakland underground hip-hop group Zion I, was to be paid $2,500 for a 10-minute performance. He was scheduled to perform less than an hour before Breed was due to speak on the same stage. Breeds office said he performed for longer than planned and that the mayor did not end up attending the concert, only the Juneteenth parade before the show.
While there was no indication the mayor violated city policies or laws, the prospect of the city paying her boyfriend to perform at an event through the Dream Keeper Initiative creates a perception problem for Breed, experts said.
