S.F. Chronicle poll: Lurie surges in mayor's race, positioned to edge out Breed
Nonprofit founder Daniel Lurie is pulling ahead of his competitors in the San Francisco mayoral race, according to a new poll commissioned by the Chronicle.
Roughly 23% of likely voters said Lurie is their top pick for mayor, nearly identical to the 24% who said the same of Mayor London Breed. But when accounting for voters second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-place picks reflecting San Franciscos ranked-choice voting system Lurie led Breed 56% to 44% in the final tally.
The results reflect a turn for Lurie, an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune who has funded his campaign with millions of his own dollars. The Chronicles previous poll, conducted in August, showed him struggling to gain as many first-choice votes as Breed and former San Francisco Supervisor Mark Farrell. Farrells support dropped the most of any candidate from the previous Chronicle poll, going from 20% of first-choice votes to 14%, even as the number of undecided voters grew smaller.
It is the first of the Chronicles three polls to ask likely voters about their third to fifth picks for mayor. In each round of ranked-choice voting, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are distributed to the candidates named as the next-highest choice on those ballots. The process repeats until one candidate has a majority of votes.
