Big money turns against Lurie in mayoral race

Daniel Lurie’s opponents in the San Francisco mayoral race are starting to treat him like the frontrunner he says he is.

A group backing former interim Mayor Mark Farrell has reported spending nearly $1 million in recent weeks to attack Lurie, the Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit founder now looking to become The City’s next mayor.

Largely dismissed by opponents earlier in the race, Lurie has risen in several voter polls conducted in recent weeks. On Thursday, his campaign released a new survey of 600 likely voters that showed him coming out on top in a simulation of San Francisco’s ranked-choice voting system.

On Friday, the pro-Farrell group — dubbed Safer San Francisco for Mark Farrell for Mayor 2024 — reported paying for advertisements against Lurie on Sept. 26, signaling a contentious run-up to Election Day in November.
