Crowded school-board race highlights what's at stake for SFUSD families
More than half of the seven-member San Francisco Board of Education could turn over following this years election.
Eleven candidates and just one incumbent are vying for four open spots on a leadership body tasked with leading the beleaguered public-school district through some of its biggest challenges in decades.
Board President Matt Alexander is seeking reelection, while fellow board members Jenny Lam, Mark Sanchez and Kevine Boggess are not running for additional terms as the district contends with forthcoming school closures, a state-imposed hiring freeze and a continuing enrollment decline.
The board itself has not been without controversy in recent years, attracting international headlines during the COVID-19 pandemic when commissioners reviewed the names of certain schools while students took classes from home.
